The Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of Alabama provides representation to persons charged with federal crimes in the thirty-one northern counties of Alabama. The Birmingham and Huntsville offices offer an unpaid internship program to second and third year law students.
Law interns assist attorneys and investigators at all stages of client representation, including, interviewing clients and witnesses, reviewing and organizing discovery materials, researching constitutional and criminal law issues, drafting motions and pleadings, and preparing cases for trial. Law interns also have opportunities to observe criminal trials and hearings.
Applicants are required to demonstrate excellent research and writing skills and have a strong interest in indigent defense issues. Prior course work in criminal law and criminal procedure is encouraged.
The program requires a commitment of at least 10 hours per week for students seeking to work either during the fall or spring semester. The summer program requires a full-time commitment for at least half of the summer.
Applications must include a cover letter and resume. Please specify when you are interested in working and whether you prefer to work in the Birmingham or Huntsville office. Students pursuing externship credit are welcome to apply. Please direct your application package to:
